Trailer Wheel Bearings

You try to take real good care of your vehicles. But there is something that you may be overlooking: wheel bearings on your trailer. Whether it’s a small utility trailer or toy hauler up to a big work trailer, boat or camp trailer, they all have wheels with bearings that need to be serviced from time to time. Wheel bearings allow the wheel to spin freely. They are packed in heavy duty grease that can withstand the heat generated by the spinning wheel and keep protecting the bearings. When your technician services the bearings on your trailer, he’ll remove the wheel bearing assembly and inspect the bearings themselves. If they are damaged or corroded they will be replaced. He will then pack fresh grease around the bearings, replace the seals and put the wheel back on. We actually expect a lot from trailer bearings. They may sit unused for an extended period of time – but when we hitch up that trailer we need the bearings to be in top shape to meet the demands of ... read more

Simple Answers from Clark’s Professional Car Care: Alignment

Question: How do I know when I need a wheel alignment? Clark’s Professional Car Care Answer: When Pascagoula drivers’ wheels are properly aligned they all point in the same direction. When they are out of alignment, most MS drivers notice a couple of things. First the vehicle pulls to one side when driving. It could be slight or pretty severe. If your wheels have been out of alignment for a while, you’ll also start to see uneven tire wear – the shoulder on either the outside or inside of the tire is worn down more than the other. A whole bunch of steering and suspension components are joined together. Everyday Pascagoula driving can cause Pascagoula drivers’ wheels to go out of alignment over time just from the joints loosening up. That’s why most recommend an alignment check every couple of years. Depending on where you live in MS or the conditions you drive in (off-road driving, harsh Pascagoula winter conditions, poor pavement, etc.), an ali ... read more

MAF Sensor and Engine Air Filter

Today’s Clark’s Professional Car Care post focuses on the importance of protecting your mass air flow sensor or MAF. Air and fuel are mixed together to be burned in your engine. The amount is controlled by how hard you press on the accelerator or by external factors like climbing hills or hauling loads. Based on how much air you need – and how much is available – your engine management computer tells your fuel injection system how much fuel to send to your engine. But what if the computer is getting the wrong information about how much air is coming into your engine? Well, it would send the wrong amount of fuel and your engine performance would suffer. The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures the volume, temperature and density of the air flowing into your engine. With that information, the computer calculates how much oxygen is available to burn and adjusts the amount of fuel it sends. A dirty or damaged MAF sensor can give the wrong readings, hurt your fuel economy, damage th ... read more

Tire Rotating and Balancing

You can make your vehicle tires last longer with regular tire rotation and wheel balancing. Let’s start with tire rotation. In normal driving around Pascagoula MS, your front tires wear more on the shoulders because they handle much of the cornering forces in turns. Front-wheel drive vehicles have even more force on the front tires. We rotate the tires so that all of the tires do some duty on the front end as well as getting a little break on the back end. That way, all four tires wear more evenly over their life and last longer. For most vehicles in Pascagoula MS, tires are rotated front to back. Some manufacturers recommend a cross rotational pattern that includes the spare tire, and some high-performance vehicles have different size tires on the front and rear and may even have uni-directional tires that can only be on the left or the right side of the vehicle. Spark Plugs

In Pascagoula, MS, the days when Pascagoula drivers changed their spark plugs every couple of years has ended. Back in the day, spark plugs really did wear out that often. A couple of things are different now… First, spark plugs are made of better materials that last longer for Pascagoula drivers and they’re designed better. The second reason why spark plugs used to have to be changed in vehicles and other autos was that they were fouled up with carbon deposits. The deposits built up when fuel wasn’t burned completely. With modern engine management controls that just doesn’t happen as often. Engine control computers precisely time when fuel is injected into the engine and when spark plugs fire. Unless something’s wrong, spark plugs just don’t foul like they used to. Electricity from the battery goes into a coil that allows power to build up to anywhere from 12,000 to 45,000 volts, depending on the vehicle. The engine management computer tells the coil when to release t ... read more

Cabin Air Filter

Let’s talk about cabin air filters. There seems to be some confusion about them in Pascagoula that we should be able to clear up. Much of the confusion starts because cabin air filters are relatively new. Not all vehicles in Pascagoula have them, so some people confuse their cabin air filter with the engine air filter. Every vehicle in MS has an engine air filter that cleans the air going into the engine, but not all have a cabin air filter that cleans the air going into the passenger compartment. It’s easy to get mixed up. The cabin air filter cleans out dust, pollen, spores and other pollutants. To give a point of comparison, a grain of sand is about 200 microns across. A cabin air filter can stop particles that are just 3 microns in size. It really does make the passenger cabin a much more pleasant environment. When the cabin air filter gets dirty, you just need to replace it. Your owner’s manual may have a recommended interval for changing it. If not we can inspect ... read more

Will Proper Auto Maintenance at Clark’s Professional Car Care Really Save Gas?

Will Proper Auto Maintenance at Clark’s Professional Car Care Really Save Gas?

Have you ever thought about all the little things we do to keep our lives running smoothly – like vacuuming? It makes a room feel fresher and more comfortable. We may not consider that we’re also prolonging the life of the carpet by keeping it clean. But Pascagoula drivers don’t always extend those good habits into the garage. Our vehicles need regular maintenance just like our rugs need vacuuming. We may not notice a difference in the feel or appearance of the vehicle, but, just as cleaning a carpet carries the hidden reward of prolonging its life, maintaining our vehicles incurs a hidden reward that becomes noticeable at Pascagoula gas stations. When it comes to reduced , there are two culprits: increased friction and inefficient fuel combustion. That means that anything Pascagoula drivers can do to decrease friction and increase the efficiency of their engines will translate to savings on fuel. Friction increases the amount of energy it takes to move something. So if we can ... read more
